Hanzō to Jūsannin no Kunoichi-tachi #1

Hanzō to Jūsannin no Kunoichi-tachi, or Hanzō and the Thirteen Kunoichi, emerged during the late 1970s as part of the broader gekiga movement that defined much of the seinen manga landscape in Japan. This series drew upon the enduring cultural fascination with Hattori Hanzō, the legendary ninja of the Sengoku period, placing him at the center of a stylized, adult-oriented narrative. The first issue serves as the foundational text for this specific adventure, framing the historical figure within a framework of pulp fiction intrigue and tactical martial storytelling common to the era's entertainment magazines.

The creative direction for the series prioritized dramatic, high-contrast illustration typical of the genre, focusing on themes of loyalty, espionage, and clandestine combat. While the series remains a niche entry in the extensive bibliography of ninja-themed media, it is viewed by enthusiasts of the medium as a representative artifact of the post-war Japanese obsession with ronin and shinobi narratives. Its reception was consistent with the era's serialized manga periodicals, which were designed for rapid consumption by adult male commuters seeking visceral escapism.
