Where it came from
Hare-Kon, created by mangaka Kenji Saito, emerged during a period in the mid-2010s characterized by the popularity of complex, supernatural romance manga. The series explores the intricate domestic lives of a polyamorous household through the lens of a fictional law allowing polygamy to combat declining birth rates. Published primarily within the pages of Weekly Morning, the work is noted for its blending of mature themes with dramatic storytelling, reflecting a specific subgenre of seinen manga that examines unconventional social structures.
The character designs and visual execution by Saito lean into the dramatic aesthetic common to contemporary seinen titles, prioritizing emotive expressions and detailed interior settings to ground the fantastical premise in a relatable reality. Upon its release, the series garnered a dedicated readership for its willingness to navigate the psychological tensions of its ensemble cast, establishing a distinct voice within the broader landscape of Japanese serialized comics.
