Where it came from
Hawk and Dove #1 was published in 1968 by DC Comics, emerging during a period of experimentation within the industry. Created by Steve Ditko and writer Steve Skeates, the series was designed to explore the clashing ideologies of the late 1960s. The protagonists, brothers Hank and Don Hall, served as avatars for these societal tensions, with Hawk representing a militant, aggressive approach to justice and Dove embodying a pacifist, reasoned alternative.
The character designs reflected Ditko’s distinct aesthetic, characterized by sharp lines and expressive poses that emphasized the brothers' diametrically opposed natures. While the title was an unconventional addition to the superhero landscape of the time, it gained a dedicated cult following for its willingness to engage with political philosophy, eventually securing a place in the broader DC mythos as a long-standing exploration of duality.
