Where it came from
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #6 was published by DC Comics in 2013 as part of a limited series that sought to modernize the classic 1980s property. This iteration, written by Keith Giffen and illustrated by Pop Mhan, aimed to ground the fantastical elements of Eternia in a more contemporary, gritty narrative style, moving away from the simplistic morality plays of the original animated series.
The issue serves as a critical point in the storyline, focusing on the dark reign of Despara—a brainwashed Adora—and the deepening conflict between He-Man and Skeletor. Critically, the series was well-regarded by fans of the franchise for its successful attempt to reconcile the campy nostalgia of the original toys with a more coherent, modern comic book structure, marking a notable expansion of the lore beyond the standard toy-tie-in format.
