Where it came from
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Genesis #1 was published by MV Creations in 2003 as part of a strategic effort to revitalize the Masters of the Universe franchise alongside Mattel's 2002 relaunch of the toy line. This series was intended to bridge the gap between the classic 1980s lore and the updated aesthetic of the new action figures, providing a structured origin story that appealed to both aging fans and a new generation of readers.
The comic featured creative work by Val Staples and Emiliano Santalucia, who were instrumental in shaping the expanded mythology of the 2002 series. Their design approach focused on a grittier, more cinematic interpretation of Eternia, moving away from the simplistic episodic nature of the original cartoon. The series was generally well-received by the collector community for its attention to continuity and its commitment to giving deeper character arcs to figures like Prince Adam and Skeletor.
