Where it came from
Heathcliff #2 was published by Marvel Comics in 1985 as part of a series based on George Gately’s popular long-running comic strip. The comic sought to bring the mischievous, orange tabby cat’s newspaper antics into the four-color format during a period when licensed humor titles were a staple of the direct market and newsstand sales.
The series design maintained the aesthetic of Gately’s original strip, focusing on self-contained gag panels and short stories that emphasized the character’s suburban troublemaking. While the comic was intended for a broad, younger audience, it has since become a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of 1980s licensed humor titles and is often studied for its reflection of the era's lighthearted, syndicate-based storytelling style.
