Heroes Reborn: The Return #1

Heroes Reborn: The Return #1 was published in 1997 as the concluding bridge between the controversial Heroes Reborn experiment and the mainline Marvel Universe. Following a year where key characters like the Avengers and Fantastic Four were rebooted in a pocket dimension by Franklin Richards, this four-issue miniseries was designed to reintegrate these heroes back into the primary Marvel continuity. It serves as a narrative reconciliation, addressing the displacement of these icons and resetting the status quo for the core publishing line.

The issue was written by Peter David, with interior art by Salvador Larroca. Tasked with the difficult job of untangling a complex editorial mandate, David focused on character-driven emotional stakes to justify the transition. The series was met with a mixed critical reception, reflecting the polarizing nature of the preceding Heroes Reborn era; while fans were generally relieved to see the return of established creative formulas, the creative team faced the challenge of balancing the nostalgia of the original iterations with the modern sensibilities of the late 1990s.
