Where it came from
Higurashi When They Cry: GOU, produced by Studio Passione, premiered in 2020 as a return to the long-running visual novel franchise. The series was designed to function simultaneously as a sequel and a reimagining of the original mystery, utilizing a fresh aesthetic that stayed true to Ryukishi07's unsettling tone while updating the character designs for a modern audience.
The first episode introduced a new layer of psychological horror, subverting the expectations of long-time fans who anticipated a straightforward retelling. It was notable for its shift in visual direction under director Keiichiro Kawaguchi, aiming to lure viewers into a false sense of security before revealing the series' trademark dark themes, which resulted in significant discussion within the anime community upon its release.
