Where it came from
The Higurashi When They Cry: GOU Comic Anthology #1 was released in early 2021 as a tie-in to the Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou anime series, which served as a deceptive return to the franchise. The anthology was commissioned by Square Enix to capitalize on the series' revitalized popularity, featuring a collection of short stories and illustrations by various manga artists who provided their unique interpretations of the psychological horror and mystery established in the original visual novels.
The design and content of this anthology focus on the tone of the Gou series, blending the trademark moe character aesthetic with the dark, unsettling atmosphere of Hinamizawa. These anthologies are traditionally published to showcase diverse artistic talent within the fandom, with the editorial direction aiming to bridge the gap between the anime's intense narrative shifts and the lighthearted, often humorous side-stories that have become a staple of the franchise's auxiliary manga releases.
