Where it came from
Hourman number 17, released in September 2000, was part of the final stretch of the solo series featuring the android version of the character, Matthew Tyler. Written by Tom Peyer with cover art by Rags Morales, this issue occupies a unique space in late-nineties DC comics, blending the high-concept superhero tropes of the era with the introspective, existential dilemmas inherent to an artificial being navigating the legacy of a mantle he did not choose.
The series as a whole was celebrated for its focus on character development over standard fisticuffs, with Peyer exploring Tyler’s quest to understand humanity through the lens of the Hourman legacy. Although the title was critically regarded for its wit and emotional depth, it struggled to find a commercial foothold, leading to its cancellation shortly after this issue’s release. The design and narrative tone reflect a deliberate move by DC at the turn of the millennium to revitalize B-list characters through nuanced, character-driven storytelling.
