Hyde Street #11

Hyde Street is an anthology series that emerged during the mid-2010s, capturing the distinct atmosphere of San Francisco’s urban landscape through a blend of noir, supernatural, and slice-of-life storytelling. Issue 11 stands as a representative entry in this run, reflecting the project’s overarching commitment to gritty, evocative illustration and character-driven narratives that explore the hidden corners of the city. The series was designed to function as an immersive visual journey, with various contributors focusing on the juxtaposition between the city’s historic architecture and the surreal elements of the scripts.

The aesthetic of the Hyde Street series was heavily influenced by traditional pulp magazines and modern independent graphic novels, utilizing high-contrast ink work to heighten the sense of mystery inherent in the setting. Issue 11, like its predecessors, prioritized mood and atmosphere, often receiving praise from critics for its ability to ground fantastical or unsettling scenarios in a recognizable, grounded reality. It remains a notable example of localized, independent comic production during the mid-decade surge of creator-owned publications.
