Il Segno di Zorro #v. 1 no.14

Il Segno di Zorro was a prominent Italian comic book series published by Edizioni Audace, the publishing house that would eventually evolve into Sergio Bonelli Editore. Launched in the post-war era, the series capitalised on the enduring popularity of Johnston McCulley’s legendary masked vigilante. These Italian interpretations were designed to translate the high-stakes swashbuckling of the original pulp stories into the dynamic, serialised graphic format that was rapidly gaining a dedicated readership across Italy during the 1940s and 1950s.

The series featured work from notable Italian illustrators who adapted the Zorro mythos to fit the stylistic sensibilities of the time, often leaning into dramatic chiaroscuro and fast-paced layouts. The aesthetic was a departure from American newspaper strips, favouring a grittier, more European sensibility that resonated deeply with readers seeking escapist adventure. While specific creator credits for individual issues like volume 1, number 14 are often obscured by the collective studio production methods of the era, the series remains a significant artifact of the golden age of Italian western-inspired comics.
