Where it came from
Impulse #17, published in August 1996, serves as a significant entry in the Flash-related mythos, written by Mark Waid with pencils by Humberto Ramos. This issue is part of the 'Speed Force' crossover event, which explored the mystical energy field that empowers the various speedsters in the DC Universe. The narrative focuses on Bart Allen, the grandson of Barry Allen, as he navigates his impulsive nature while grappling with the responsibilities of his superhero heritage.
The visual identity of this era is heavily defined by Humberto Ramos, whose exaggerated, kinetic art style perfectly captured the chaotic energy and youthful exuberance of Bart Allen. By mid-1996, the Impulse series had established itself as a lighthearted counterpoint to the more somber superhero comics of the decade. The design choices were intentional, aiming to distinguish the speedster's perspective through vibrant compositions and distorted proportions that mirrored his high-speed lifestyle and lack of inhibition.
