Innocent Rouge Omnibus #1

Innocent Rouge is the sequel series to Shin'ichi Sakamoto’s historical manga Innocent, which began serialization in 2015 following the conclusion of the first series. The work serves as a fictionalized biographical account of Charles-Henri Sanson, the real-life royal executioner of France during the period leading up to and including the French Revolution. Sakamoto, known for his hyper-detailed and cinematic artistic style, created this omnibus edition to collect the initial volumes of the sequel, focusing on the character of Marie-Joseph Sanson as she navigates the volatile political landscape of 18th-century France.

The design of the Innocent Rouge series is distinguished by its meticulous, often grotesque, and highly ornate aesthetic, which contrasts the brutal reality of the guillotine with the opulence of the French aristocracy. Sakamoto’s work is celebrated for its technical mastery, utilizing intricate hatching and dynamic framing that pushes the boundaries of traditional manga illustration. Critics have frequently lauded the series for its intense atmosphere and visual ambition, marking it as a significant, albeit dark, contribution to the seinen manga genre.
