Johann und Pfiffikus #1

Johann und Pfiffikus, known originally as Johan et Pirlouit, debuted in the Belgian magazine Spirou in 1952. Created by the legendary cartoonist Peyo, the series follows the adventures of a young page and his mischievous companion in a medieval fantasy setting. The initial issues were born out of the Franco-Belgian comics tradition of the post-war era, aiming to blend swashbuckling adventure with gentle, character-driven humor that appealed to a broad readership.

Peyo designed the characters to be highly expressive, utilizing a rounded, clear-line style that would later define his most famous creation, the Smurfs. The series was exceptionally well-received, lauded for its intricate world-building and the dynamic interplay between the noble Johann and the cynical, flute-playing Pfiffikus. This first issue remains a significant historical artifact, marking the humble beginnings of a series that eventually laid the foundational lore for the entire Smurf universe.
