Justice League America #39

Published by DC Comics in July 1990, Justice League America #39 is a significant entry in the Justice League International era of the series. This period, spearheaded by writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis with art by Adam Hughes, was defined by its unique blend of superhero action and ensemble sitcom-style humor. The issue serves as a mid-point for the 'The Gray Man' arc, continuing the creative team's successful effort to humanize DC's most powerful icons through complex interpersonal dynamics and comedic workplace tensions.

The cover art and interior illustrations by Adam Hughes marked a transitional moment in his career, showcasing the detailed, expressive style that would eventually make him one of the most prominent cover artists in the industry. At the time of release, the series was well-regarded for its subversive take on the 'super-team' trope, earning a dedicated readership that appreciated the departure from the grim, high-stakes tone common in late 1980s comics. It remains a fan favorite for its balance of character-driven storytelling and the polished, clean aesthetic of the era.
