Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth was conceived by Jack Kirby in 1972, emerging during a period when the comic book industry was navigating a shift away from the traditional superhero archetypes of the Silver Age. Kirby, having recently moved to DC Comics, drew inspiration from the post-apocalyptic motifs of films like Planet of the Apes to create a sprawling, dystopian world where humanity has been reduced to a feral state and evolved animals hold dominion over the planet.
