Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, debuted in 1964 within the pages of the alternative manga magazine Garo. Created by the visionary mangaka Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged as a pillar of the gekiga movement, which sought to move manga beyond juvenile entertainment toward complex, socially conscious storytelling. The first issue introduced readers to the brutal, feudal landscape of Edo-period Japan, centering on the titular outcast ninja as a lens to explore class conflict, systemic oppression, and the struggle for individual autonomy.

Shirato’s design for the series was notable for its stark, cinematic panels and meticulous historical research, which provided a gritty, uncompromising realism that challenged the established aesthetics of the era. The work was met with intense critical acclaim and became an intellectual touchstone for the student protest movements of 1960s Japan.
