Kamui-Den #21

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of Garo, a seminal Japanese alternative manga magazine founded by Katsuichi Nagai. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged during a period of intense social and political upheaval in Japan, serving as a complex exploration of class struggle, feudal oppression, and the harsh realities of life for the outcasts of the Edo period. The work was groundbreaking for its dense, novelistic approach to storytelling and its refusal to simplify the moral dilemmas faced by its titular protagonist, a runaway ninja seeking freedom.

The visual language of Kamui-Den is defined by Shirato’s stark, kinetic art style, which prioritized historical realism and intricate depictions of action over the more stylized aesthetics prevalent in contemporary shonen manga. By the time of the release of issue 21, the series had firmly established its reputation as a cornerstone of the gekiga movement—a genre focused on serious, dramatic narratives for adult audiences. Its reception was profound, influencing a generation of artists and thinkers who viewed the manga as a sophisticated vessel for radical philosophy and social commentary.
