Kamui-Den #10

Kamui-Den, created by Sanpei Shirato, began its run in the inaugural issue of the alternative manga magazine Garo in 1964. The series is widely considered a landmark in gekiga—dramatic, realistic manga—due to its unflinching depiction of feudal Japanese society, class struggle, and the brutal life of the outcasts known as the burakumin. Issue 10 occupies a mid-period space in the original serialized run, reflecting Shirato's shift toward increasingly complex historical narratives that blended martial arts choreography with heavy socio-political critique.

Shirato’s design philosophy for the series centered on the concept of 'the dialectic of nature,' emphasizing the interplay between individual agency and the systemic structures of the Tokugawa period. His stark, high-contrast ink work and dynamic, cinematically framed fight scenes were revolutionary at the time, helping Garo establish itself as a hub for intellectual, avant-garde storytelling. While it was initially a cult success, the series resonated deeply with student activist movements of the 1960s, securing its legacy as one of the most influential manga works in modern Japanese history.
