Kamui-Den #16

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, was serialized beginning in 1964 in the alternative manga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged from the politically charged climate of 1960s Japan, serving as a complex exploration of class struggle, feudal oppression, and the harsh realities faced by the burakumin caste. Shirato, who had a background in leftist activism, utilized the medium of the gekiga—a more mature and cinematic style of manga—to ground his narrative in historical research while challenging the social status quo.

The visual design of Kamui-Den is defined by Shirato’s stark, high-contrast ink work, which emphasizes the grit and brutality of the Edo period. Rather than focusing solely on heroic ninja tropes, the series prioritizes a sprawling, systemic look at society, characterized by detailed political commentary and philosophical inquiries. Upon its release, the work was met with significant critical acclaim for its intellectual depth and became a touchstone for the student protest movements of the era, cementing its place as a seminal work in the history of Japanese alternative comics.
