Kamui-Den #14

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in the influential manga magazine Garo in 1964. Written and illustrated by Sanpei Shirato, the series served as a landmark work in the gekiga movement, which shifted the medium toward more mature, politically charged, and socially conscious storytelling. Issue 14 arrived during a period when the series was gaining significant traction for its unflinching portrayal of feudal Japanese caste systems and class struggle.

Shirato’s design for the series was heavily influenced by his commitment to historical realism and his background in Marxist theory. His aesthetic utilized sharp, cinematic paneling and visceral action sequences to highlight the brutal survival of the oppressed. The work was received as a revolutionary critique of authority, deeply resonating with the student movements and counterculture circles of 1960s Japan, ultimately solidifying its status as a foundational text in alternative manga.
