Kamui-Den #15

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of the monthly alternative manga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series was a groundbreaking work of gekiga—a more mature and dramatic style of manga—that explored deep themes of class struggle, feudal oppression, and social hierarchies in Edo-period Japan. Issue 15 arrived during the height of the series' influence, capturing Shirato's signature stark, ink-heavy aesthetic and his uncompromising commitment to depicting the brutal realities of life for the outcast 'hidden' class.

The design and narrative thrust of the series were intentionally provocative, crafted to challenge the prevailing optimism found in children's manga of the era. Shirato, alongside his brother and assistant Tetsuji Okamoto, utilized cinematic panel layouts and a gritty, historical realism that resonated deeply with the burgeoning student protest movements of the 1960s. Upon its release, the work was widely received as a seminal piece of counter-culture literature, praised for its intellectual rigor and its unflinching look at the cyclic nature of violence and systemic injustice.
