Kamui-Den #2

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, was serialized beginning in 1964 within the pages of the avant-garde manga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged during a period of significant social upheaval in Japan, serving as a gritty, historical critique of the rigid Edo-period class system. By focusing on the life of an outcast ninja, Shirato utilized the narrative to explore themes of oppression, dialectical materialism, and the struggle of the marginalized.

The visual style of the series is noted for its raw, kinetic energy and stark character designs, which moved away from the more whimsical aesthetics prevalent in children's manga at the time. Shirato's work on this series is widely regarded as a watershed moment in gekiga, or dramatic pictures, elevating the medium to a form of sophisticated social commentary. Issue #2 continues the foundational exploration of Kamui’s rejection by his clan, establishing the heavy atmosphere and philosophical weight that solidified the series' enduring influence on Japanese graphic literature.
