Kamui-Den #3

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of the monthly alternative manga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged during a period of intense social and political upheaval in Japan, serving as a complex exploration of caste systems, class struggle, and survival in the Edo period. Shirato, who had deep ties to Marxist philosophy and social activism, utilized the medium to critique authority through the lens of a ninja’s alienated existence, intentionally moving away from the lighthearted action tropes common in the genre at the time.

The visual language of the series was defined by Shirato’s gritty, kinetic illustration style, which focused on the brutal realities of survival rather than idealized heroism. Issue #3 reflects this commitment to historical realism and dense narrative, which garnered a devoted following among university students and intellectuals of the 1960s. The work is widely recognized for its significant influence on the gekiga movement, which pushed manga toward mature, dramatic storytelling and established a template for later dark fantasy and social-commentary manga.
