Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in the monthly gekiga magazine Garo in 1964. Written and illustrated by Sanpei Shirato, the series was a landmark work in the gekiga movement, which sought to shift manga toward more mature, politically charged, and socially conscious narratives. The series is set in Edo-period Japan and follows the life of a runaway ninja, using his struggle for survival to explore complex themes of class conflict, caste systems, and historical materialism.

Issue number four reflects the dense, ink-heavy visual style for which Shirato is renowned, emphasizing gritty action and historical research. At the time of its publication, the series resonated deeply with student activists and intellectuals who saw the plight of the outcasts in Kamui’s world as a critique of contemporary social hierarchies. The design remains iconic for its stark, unflinching portrayal of violence and its departure from the more whimsical manga styles prevalent in the mid-1960s.
