Kamui-Den: Dainibu #13

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, is a landmark gekiga manga series created by Sanpei Shirato. The second series, Dainibu, was serialized in the late 1960s and 1970s, continuing the sprawling, complex narrative of an outcast ninja navigating the rigid, oppressive caste system of Edo-period Japan. Shirato intended for the work to serve as a deep socio-political commentary, utilizing historical drama to critique contemporary societal hierarchies and exploitation.

The visual style of the series is defined by Shirato’s intense, gritty illustration technique and dense page layouts. By issue number 13 of the second series, the narrative had solidified its reputation for unflinching realism and bleak thematic depth. Upon its release, the series was received as a revolutionary piece of literature that pushed the boundaries of the medium, heavily influencing the development of mature, politically engaged manga throughout Japan.
