Kamui-Den: Dainibu #15

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, is a landmark work of gekiga manga created by Sanpei Shirato, which began serialization in the mid-1960s within the pages of the avant-garde magazine Garo. This second series, Dainibu, continued the complex historical narrative of Kamui, a runaway ninja navigating the rigid, oppressive caste system of Edo-period Japan. The work is widely recognized for its socio-political commentary, detailed depiction of rural class struggle, and Shirato’s meticulous research into historical realism and martial arts.

The design and artistic approach of the series reflect Shirato's dedication to the gekiga style, which prioritized dramatic, cinematic storytelling and intense psychological depth over the more stylized conventions of contemporary children's manga. Issue 15 represents a chapter in this sprawling, dense narrative that challenged readers with its grim themes of survival and systemic inequality. Upon its release, the series became a cornerstone of the countercultural movement in Japan, exerting a profound influence on both manga creators and the intellectual climate of the era.
