Where it came from
Kamui-Den: Dainibu, or The Legend of Kamui: Part Two, was created by the pioneering manga artist Sanpei Shirato. Following the immense cultural impact of the original series, which explored themes of caste struggle and feudal unrest, this second part continued to delve into complex social hierarchies in Edo-period Japan. The narrative is renowned for its dense, academic approach to historical setting and its unflinching depiction of the brutal realities faced by the outcast class.
The series reflects Shirato’s background in left-wing political movements and his commitment to realism in graphic storytelling. The design of each volume, including issue #16, emphasizes stark, high-contrast imagery and meticulously researched period detail. While the series was often intellectually demanding for its readers, it solidified Shirato’s reputation as a vital voice in gekiga, moving manga away from purely escapist entertainment toward serious social and political commentary.
