Kamui-Den: Dainibu #22

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, is a landmark gekiga series created by Sanpei Shirato that first began serialization in 1964. The second part, known as Dainibu, continued the complex exploration of caste systems, social rebellion, and the harsh realities of life in Edo-period Japan. Issue number 22 is part of this expansive narrative saga, which is widely recognized for its deep political subtext and sophisticated approach to period drama.

The visual style of the series was defined by Shirato’s meticulous research and dynamic, gritty character designs, which moved away from the simplistic tropes of the era to offer a more grounded and often brutal perspective. Upon its release, the series became a cornerstone of the counterculture movement in Japan, resonating deeply with student protesters and intellectuals who found parallels between the historical oppression depicted in the pages and contemporary societal struggles.
