Kamui-Den: Dainibu #21

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, was created by the visionary manga artist Sanpei Shirato and began its serialization in the underground political magazine Garo in 1964. The second part, known as Dainibu, continued the complex saga of Kamui, a runaway ninja navigating the rigid, oppressive caste systems of Edo-period Japan. Shirato designed the series as an ambitious critique of feudal structures, infusing the narrative with historical materialism and intense, stylized action that redefined the gekiga genre for a generation of socially conscious readers.

Issue 21 of Dainibu arrived during the height of the series' influence on Japanese youth culture and the student movements of the late 1960s. The artwork, characterized by Shirato's stark, kinetic linework and cinematic framing, was widely praised for its ability to marry philosophical density with visceral storytelling. As part of a longer, multi-volume epic, this issue stands as a testament to Shirato's role in elevating manga from simple entertainment to a sophisticated medium for political and social discourse.
