Kamui-Den: Dainibu #9

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, is a landmark work of gekiga manga created by Sanpei Shirato. The second series, Dainibu, continued the complex socio-political narrative of the original, focusing on the struggles of the oppressed underclass in feudal Japan. This series was serialized in the late 1960s and 1970s, a period marked by significant student activism and social upheaval in Japan, which mirrored the revolutionary themes of class conflict and systemic injustice central to Shirato's storytelling.

The aesthetic of Dainibu is defined by Shirato’s intense, gritty line work and cinematic pacing, which helped define the gekiga movement as a mature departure from traditional postwar manga. Issue #9 serves as a crucial chapter in this dense narrative tapestry, reflecting the intricate world-building and philosophical inquiries that made the series a cult phenomenon. It was received as a provocative piece of literature that challenged readers to engage with historical materialism while maintaining the tension of a ninja-themed action drama.
