Kamui Gaiden #10

Kamui Gaiden, created by the legendary manga artist Sanpei Shirato, began its serialization in 1965 within the pages of the monthly magazine Garo. As a seminal work in the gekiga genre, it departed from the more whimsical storytelling of the era to provide a gritty, philosophical examination of feudal Japan. Issue #10 arrived during a period where Shirato was cementing his reputation for blending intricate historical research with a deep interest in social hierarchy and the harsh realities of ninja life.

The design and narrative structure of the series were intentionally austere, utilizing sharp, high-contrast black-and-white ink work that prioritized tension and movement over decorative aesthetics. Shirato’s intent was to challenge the status quo, using the protagonist, Kamui, as a vessel to explore themes of betrayal, survival, and the impossibility of escaping one's social destiny. The work was met with significant critical acclaim, particularly among the student movements of the late 1960s who resonated with its anti-establishment themes.
