Kamui Gaiden #9

Kamui Gaiden, written and illustrated by Sanpei Shirato, debuted in the late 1960s as a foundational work of gekiga, or dramatic comics intended for mature audiences. This series emerged from a climate of radical political activism in Japan, utilizing the historical setting of the Edo period to explore complex themes of class struggle, social alienation, and the brutal reality of the shinobi lifestyle. Shirato’s work was noted for its dense narrative structure and a commitment to historical realism that contrasted sharply with the more whimsical manga of the era.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by Shirato’s sharp, kinetic linework and his focus on the technical mechanics of martial arts and survival. Issue number nine continues the saga of the protagonist Kamui, a runaway ninja haunted by his former clan. Upon its release, the series became a cornerstone of the counterculture movement, celebrated by critics and intellectuals for its unflinching examination of power structures and the philosophy of individual autonomy versus collective duty.
