Kull the Conqueror #10

Published by Marvel Comics in 1973, Kull the Conqueror #10 serves as a key installment in the series featuring Robert E. Howard’s pre-Conan barbarian king. This issue continued the legacy of the character under the Marvel banner, a project largely driven by Roy Thomas, who was instrumental in adapting Howard’s literary works into the comic book medium during the 1970s. The series was designed to lean into the 'sword and sorcery' aesthetic that had become a commercial juggernaut for the publisher following the success of Conan the Barbarian.

The artwork for this period of the series was heavily defined by the contributions of artist Marie Severin and inkers like John Severin, who provided a gritty, atmospheric visual style that matched the brooding tone of the source material. Readers at the time responded to the series as a darker, more cerebral counterpart to the action-oriented Conan titles. The issue remains a point of interest for collectors focusing on the mid-1970s bronze age expansion of Marvel’s fantasy imprint, reflecting the specific narrative approach of the editorial team to keep the Atlantean king distinct from his successors.
