Kuni wo Ketta Otoko #1

Kuni wo Ketta Otoko, or 'The Man Who Kicked the Country,' is a notable manga series penned by the prolific writer Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by the artist Mitsuyoshi Sonoda. Published in the early 1970s, the series emerged during a golden age of seinen manga, a period marked by a shift toward more complex, often gritty narratives aimed at adult readers. The story centers on the political machinations and turbulent career of a protagonist navigating the high-stakes world of Japanese governance, reflecting the era's fascination with power dynamics and individual ambition.

The aesthetic of the first issue captures the bold, dramatic line work characteristic of Sonoda's style during this decade. Kajiwara, already legendary for his work on sports dramas like Ashita no Joe, applied his signature intensity to the political genre, aiming to craft a visceral depiction of societal influence. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its sharp commentary on the internal structures of postwar Japanese politics, serving as a darker, more cynical counterpart to the mainstream political reporting of the time.
