Where it came from
La Fanfare au Clair de Lune is a French independent comic series that emerged from the vibrant underground publishing scene of the late 20th century. Issue #2 continues the narrative established in the debut, characterized by a whimsical, surrealist aesthetic that contrasts sharply with mainstream commercial comics of the era. The series was designed to explore themes of nocturnal urban fantasy, utilizing a distinctively atmospheric illustrative style that prioritizes mood and fluid character movement over rigid panel structures.
The creative direction behind the series was focused on capturing the ephemeral feeling of midnight strolls and jazz-infused nightlife. The illustrations in the second issue reflect an intentional shift toward more experimental layouts, with the creators aiming to evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia. Upon its release, the work was noted by aficionados of the independent press for its artisanal production quality and its dedication to maintaining a consistent, dreamlike visual language across its limited run.
