Lady Oscar - Die Rose von Versailles #6

The Rose of Versailles, known in Japan as Versaiyu no Bara, was originally serialized by Riyoko Ikeda in the manga magazine Margaret starting in 1972. The series was heavily influenced by Stefan Zweig’s biography of Marie Antoinette, leading Ikeda to craft a sweeping historical drama set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It became a seminal work in the shojo genre, praised for its complex exploration of gender, political upheaval, and tragic romance, which helped cement Ikeda’s status as a foundational figure in manga history.

Issue number 6 of this series falls within the established run of the manga’s original publication cycle. The character design is defined by Ikeda's signature ornate, flowing art style, which emphasizes expressive, large eyes and intricate period costumes that characterize the dramatic aesthetic of the 1970s. Upon its release, the series was received with immense critical and popular success, eventually leading to numerous adaptations, including the legendary 1979 anime directed by Tadao Nagahama and Osamu Dezaki.
