Where it came from
Land of Never #1 emerged during the mid-2000s independent comics surge, a period defined by creators exploring surrealist fantasy themes outside the mainstream superhero market. Published by an imprint looking to carve out a niche in allegorical storytelling, the issue was designed to establish a dreamlike, dark aesthetic that relied heavily on atmospheric world-building rather than traditional episodic cliffhangers.
The visual identity of the series was crafted to evoke classic storybook illustration styles juxtaposed with modern graphic novel paneling. The creators intended for the artwork to feel timeless and unsettling, a stylistic choice that was met with praise from critics for its artistic ambition, though it remained a cult curiosity rather than a commercial blockbuster.
