Where it came from
Le Fantôme, the French-language iteration of the American comic strip The Phantom, was published in France by Éditions des Remparts. The series sought to bring Lee Falk’s iconic jungle hero to a francophone audience, adapting the long-running saga of the Ghost Who Walks for a European market that had a deep appreciation for the adventure genre and serialized storytelling.
Issue #242 reflects the mid-series aesthetic, characterized by the dramatic, high-contrast black-and-white ink work that defined the character’s legacy. These issues were typically produced in a digest format, prioritizing readability and narrative consistency. While the series eventually concluded, it remains a significant touchstone for collectors of international comics, representing the enduring global reach of Falk’s creation.
