Le Fantôme #351

Le Fantôme, the French-language iteration of Lee Falk’s iconic comic strip The Phantom, arrived in France through the post-war resurgence of serialized adventure literature. Issue #351 belongs to the long-running series published by Éditions des Remparts, which played a pivotal role in introducing francophone readers to the world’s first costumed crime-fighter. The series was designed to appeal to youth audiences by blending mystery, exotic locales, and the moral rectitude of the Ghost Who Walks.

The publication history of this series is defined by its commitment to the classic adventure aesthetic, featuring covers that emphasize the dramatic silhouettes and rugged persona of the hero. While the internal art often relied on syndicated material from the United States, the editorial decisions made by the team at Éditions des Remparts ensured the series maintained a consistent tone, eventually becoming a staple of French kiosque culture throughout the mid-twentieth century.
