Le Fantôme #372

Le Fantôme, the French translation of Lee Falk’s iconic comic strip The Phantom, has a storied history in European publishing. Originally debuting in the United States in 1936, the character—often called the Ghost Who Walks—found a massive and dedicated audience in France through the publisher Éditions des Remparts. Issue #372 arrived during a period when the series had become a staple of French kiosk culture, providing readers with consistent, localized adventures of the jungle-dwelling hero.

The aesthetic of this specific era of the French run was defined by the transition from traditional newsprint serials to more compact, digest-style formats intended for wider distribution. While the interior artwork was largely adapted from the original American syndication strips, the cover designs often featured bold, stylized illustrations tailored to catch the eye of European readers. These issues were viewed primarily as accessible entertainment, though they have since become significant artifacts for collectors documenting the international reach and cultural adaptation of early 20th-century American pulp mythology.
