Los Asesinatos de la Mansión Decagonal #1

Los Asesinatos de la Mansión Decagonal, originally published in Japan as The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji in 1987, serves as a seminal work in the Shin Honkaku or 'New Authentic' mystery movement. This literary subgenre emerged as a reaction against the social realism that dominated Japanese crime fiction, seeking a return to the classic, puzzle-oriented 'whodunit' traditions established by Golden Age writers like Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara, distills Ayatsuji's complex narrative into a visual format that honors the atmospheric tension and structural ingenuity of the original novel.

The story follows a group of university mystery club members who visit a remote island featuring an iconic ten-sided structure, where they soon find themselves targeted by an unknown assailant. Kiyohara's design approach leans into the stark, geometric claustrophobia of the setting, utilizing precise linework to emphasize the isolation and psychological unraveling of the characters. Upon its release, the adaptation was widely praised for its ability to maintain the narrative's central, twist-driven momentum while providing a fresh aesthetic perspective that introduced a new generation of readers to the foundational principles of the Honkaku style.
