Where it came from
Los Asesinatos de la Mansión Decagonal, or The Decagon House Murders, originated as a seminal 1987 novel by Yukito Ayatsuji that effectively launched the 'shin honkaku' or 'new orthodox' mystery movement in Japan. This subgenre sought to revitalize the classic golden age detective fiction style, emphasizing logical puzzle-solving and elaborate, fair-play whodunit structures. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara, was developed to bring Ayatsuji’s claustrophobic, isolated-setting narrative to a visual medium, maintaining the atmospheric tension of the original text.
Hiro Kiyohara’s art style was chosen to translate the eerie architectural significance of the decagonal mansion into a tangible, chilling experience for readers. The adaptation was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material’s intricate plot and its ability to capture the psychological unease of the characters trapped on the island. By serializing the work, the team allowed the slow-burn reveal of the mystery to unfold with precision, cementing its status as a cornerstone of modern Japanese mystery manga.
