Where it came from
Lucifer #19, released in late 2001, is part of the critically acclaimed Vertigo series written by Mike Carey. The title emerged from the character's breakout role in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, focusing on the Morningstar's existential journey after abandoning his throne in Hell to run a piano bar in Los Angeles. This specific issue is a chapter within the overarching narrative that explores themes of free will, divine hierarchy, and the philosophical consequences of a fallen angel attempting to build his own universe.
The interior art for this issue was provided by Dean Ormston, following the series' established aesthetic of dark, atmospheric, and sophisticated fantasy illustration. The creative team aimed to maintain the high narrative bar set by the series' launch, blending noir sensibilities with high-concept mythology. The issue was well-received by fans and critics alike, consistent with the broader Vertigo imprint’s reputation for pushing the boundaries of mature-audience storytelling in the early 2000s.
