Lucifer #22

Lucifer issue 22, released in 2002 as part of the acclaimed Vertigo series, serves as the conclusion to the 'Inferno' story arc. Written by Mike Carey and featuring cover art by Christopher Moeller, this issue marks a pivotal moment in the series as the Morningstar navigates the complexities of his self-created cosmos. The series itself grew out of Carey's work on The Sandman, expanding upon the character of Lucifer Morningstar to explore themes of free will, creation, and existential independence.

The visual identity of this era of Lucifer is noted for its sophisticated, sometimes painterly aesthetic that departed from traditional superhero comic styles. Under the editorial guidance of the Vertigo imprint, the series was designed to appeal to a more mature readership, focusing on intricate dialogue and philosophical inquiry rather than conventional action. It was well-received by critics for its consistent world-building and Carey's ability to maintain a distinct voice for a character defined by his pride and intellectual detachment.
