Where it came from
Lucifer #9, published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in 2000, is a pivotal installment in Mike Carey’s long-running series featuring the character spun off from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. The series explores the theological and existential aftermath of Lucifer Morningstar’s resignation from Hell, positioning him as a cosmic antihero navigating the complexities of free will and divine architecture.
The issue features artwork by Scott Hampton, whose painterly, atmospheric style was instrumental in establishing the dark, ethereal tone of the early series. This particular installment focuses on the intricate world-building of the DC Vertigo universe, prioritizing philosophical narrative depth over standard superhero tropes, which earned the series significant critical acclaim for its sophisticated writing and unconventional visual presentation.
