Where it came from
MAD magazine issue number 391, released in March 2000, reflects the publication's enduring satirical approach to turn-of-the-millennium pop culture. By this era, the magazine had transitioned into a glossy format, moving away from its original black-and-white newsprint roots while maintaining its core mission of lampooning entertainment, politics, and consumerism through its signature blend of irreverent humor and detailed caricature.
The cover art for this specific issue, illustrating a parodic take on popular media tropes of the time, features the work of frequent contributors who helped define the magazine's late-90s aesthetic. Following the long-standing editorial tradition established by William Gaines and Harvey Kurtzman, the issue served as a snapshot of the cultural anxieties and trends prevalent at the start of the new decade, remaining a staple of the satire genre for loyal readers and collectors alike.
