Mage: The Hero Discovered #8

Mage: The Hero Discovered #8 was published in 1985 as part of a groundbreaking creator-owned series written and illustrated by Matt Wagner. The series reimagined Arthurian legend in a contemporary American setting, centering on Kevin Matchstick, an ordinary man who discovers he is the reincarnation of King Arthur. The eighth issue arrived during the height of the independent comics movement in the mid-1980s, a period where creators began to assert greater artistic control over their intellectual properties outside of the traditional superhero publishing houses.

Matt Wagner’s artistic approach for the series was notable for its distinct, bold linework and expressive, often stark aesthetic that distanced the work from the glossy house styles of the time. The series received significant critical acclaim for its blend of gritty realism and high-fantasy mythos, helping to establish Wagner as a prominent voice in modern comics. Readers and critics at the time praised the series for its emotional depth and its departure from standard genre tropes, securing its legacy as a seminal work in the independent landscape.
