Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #31

The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a long-running horror anthology series published by Charlton Comics, beginning its tenure in 1967. Issue number 31, published in 1972, emerged during the height of the Bronze Age of comics, a period defined by a shift toward more complex psychological storytelling and the easing of the restrictive Comics Code Authority standards. Dr. Graves served as the series' host, a supernatural narrator similar to EC Comics' iconic figures, guiding readers through tales of the macabre and the uncanny.

The series benefited significantly from the artistic contributions of industry veterans like Steve Ditko and Tom Sutton, whose distinct styles helped define the aesthetic of Charlton's horror line. The editorial direction aimed to capture a niche audience that enjoyed atmospheric, tongue-in-cheek dread rather than purely graphic violence. This issue stands as a representative example of how the series balanced traditional anthology storytelling with the idiosyncratic, often surreal visual language that became a hallmark of the Charlton horror stable.
